چکیده

N UMMULAR OR DYSREGULATIVE MICRObial eczema, which is a subtype of chronic dermatitis, is characterized by coin-shaped, sharply demarcated, erythematous lesions with serous exudates demonstrated on dermatopathologic examination. These serum exudates can be seen dermoscopically as shiny yellow clods with a diameter of 1 to 2 mm. The closest differential diagnoses, which are psoriasis and tinea corporis, typically do not have them. Figure 1 (upper inset) shows a roundish nummular eczema with multiple yellow clods (Figure 1, original magnification 10) on the calf of a 51-year-old man. Other dermoscopic features of nummular eczema are evident on the back of the hand of a 76-year-old man (Figure 2). These clods are not visible without immersion fluid but are readily identifiable when the lesion is prewetted. Figure 1 (lower insert) shows a hematoxylin-eosin–stained biopsy specimen of the serum crust seen in Figure 1. Bleeding lesions, such as pyogenic granulomas, excoriations, or basal cell carcinomas, form reddish crusts instead.

Suction Compression Index based on CLOD Test Results

Determination of the suction compression index, Ch, is necessary for predicting expansive soil heave based on soil suction. The CLOD Test is a convenient laboratory procedure for determining Ch, however it is not widely used. Rather, engineers often rely upon empirical correlations to find Ch. A laboratory investigation was conducted to verify previously established empirical relationships. The...

Treatment with liposome-encapsulated clodronate as a new strategic approach in the management of immune thrombocytopenic purpura in a mouse model.

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disease related to the presence of elevated levels of platelet-associated immunoglobulin, or autoantibodies. In recent years the importance of macrophage Fc gamma receptors in the uptake of platelets in ITP has been confirmed. Although in patients with ITP the platelet destruction occurs in liver and spleen, in this present experimental mou...

Brain perivascular macrophages and the sympathetic response to inflammation in rats after myocardial infarction.

Inflammation is associated with increased sympathetic drive in cardiovascular diseases. Blood-borne proinflammatory cytokines, markers of inflammation, induce cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) activity in perivascular macrophages of the blood-brain barrier. COX-2 generates prostaglandin E(2), which may enter the brain and increase sympathetic nerve activity. We examined the contribution of this mechanis...

The harlequin nail. A marker for smoking cessation.

Changes in the human nail frequently serve as an indicator of local and systemic disease. Alterations in the morphology, structure and growth characteristics of the nail accompany chronic cigarette smoking; yellow pigmentation of the nail plate--referred to as the "nicotine sign"--is common. The clubbed yellow nail may indicate the presence of lung cancer. In contrast to the ominous nature of t...
